Under the auspices of the Reischauer Center’s Summer Internship Program, Japan Studies concentrators have the opportunity to experience working in Japan. Since sending its first intern shortly after the Center was founded in 1984, it has now sent over 100 students to Japan to work in various Japanese and American organizations for up to 10 weeks during the summer. The program allows students to further enhance their language proficiency, a critical component of the Japan Studies Program at Johns Hopkins SAIS, and develop skills pertinent to their future careers in multi-cultural environments.

First-year MA students who already have sufficient Japanese language skills, a desire to be immersed in a Japanese work environment, and a strong academic record are encouraged to apply by contacting the Reischauer Center (reischauer@jhu.edu) for more information.

Past Internships

While the Reischauer Center’s Summer Internship Program sends students to a wide variety of organizations, a small sample includes:

• Research organizations such as the Mitsubishi Research Institute, the Mitsui Global Strategic Studies Institute (MGSSI), Nomura Research, and the Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI)
• Government-related institutions such as the US Embassy in Tokyo and the National Diet of Japan
• Media organizations such as the Mainichi Shimbun and the Yomiuri Shimbun
• Financial institutions and corporations such as the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan, Daiwa Securities, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., and Toyota Motor Corporation
